Du lịch S Việt Nam - Kết nối văn hóa Việt...

Nov 26, 2014

Vietnam was a very different place 20 years ago. Poverty was widespread, with millions of families struggling to feed their children. Today, much progress has been made, but malnutrition remains one of the most serious health risks faced by Vietnamese children

Vietnamese Children

According to UNICEF, one-third of Vietnamese children under the age of 5 are stunted as a result of malnutrition. But Vietnam is making progress, currently leading the way in decreasing rates of malnutrition.

Life is particularly hard for many families living in Vietnam's mountainous areas, with rough terrain and a lack of roads creating greater isolation. This results in disparities between rural communities and urban areas in terms of malnutrition reduction.

If children do not receive the vitamins and nutrients they need to grow, their overall health can be affected well into adulthood. As well as potentially harming cognitive development, malnutrition can also lead to reduced immunity to disease and heightened susceptibility to infection.

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT VIETNAM EDUCATION

90.3% (of those ages 15 and above) can read and write (2000 census).

Primary school - 5 years
Lower secondary - 4 years
Upper secondary (academic/vocational) - 3 years
University - usually 4 years

Primary and secondary education is provided by the government free to all. Children usually begin school at age 5 or 6. All Vietnamese children attend primary schools and are encouraged to finish secondary school.

Secondary education commences at the age of 11 (grade 6) and continues to the age of 17 (grade 12). Most government school facilities cannot accomodate all of the children at once, so they run two sessions - morning and afternoon. The school week runs from Monday to Saturday and schools are closed from June to September.

Vietnam also has secondary vocational schools which allow specialisation in such fields as industry, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, economics, teacher training, medicine, gymnastics and sports and culture and arts.
